The village of Telkwa is located along Highway 16, nearly 15 km southeast of the town of Smithers.

The history of Telkwa dates back to the 1860s, with the first arrival of construction teams to build the Collins Overland Telegraph Line. Today, arriving in Telkwa is like stepping into living history, as original pioneer homes and businesses still exist, and continue to be used.

Telkwa has a population of around 1400 people, with approximately 500 private dwellings. Highway 16 runs right through the middle of Telkwa. The Volunteer fire Department also responds to the District of Telkwa's emergencies.

 

 

 

Volunteer Fire Fighters Wanted

The Telkwa Volunteer Fire Department is currently looking for men and women to join in their ranks. You need to be 18 year or older, and need to fill out a Fire Fighter Application form. Please submit your application form to the Village of Telkwa, and the Chief or Deputy Chief will be in touch with you shortly.

Being a volunteer fire fighter is one of the most rewarding commitments you can ever make. Not only do you help protect your community, but you also help with community events like the Annual Fire Fighter vs. RCMP hockey game, and you help other organizations like The Kinsmen put on their community events (ie. fire suppression for the Telkwa Derby).

You also get educated in first aid, up to the level of First Responder, as well as the availability of taking courses to increase your knowledge and certifications in fire fighting.

We are the emergency services for the Village of Telkwa and surrounding regional district. We fight fires, we deal with emergency situations, we education the public, and we build community by holding events. Its the most rewarding thing you will ever do.
